Plastic Covered Purse with Antique Style Boat Pattern. 1960s. Maker: Unknown. Gorgeous bag with an antique style print of boats, palm trees and people, covered in plastic, then decoratively stitched. Gold lame trim and handle.

I have a number of these plastic covered bags. This one is in nice condition, considering that many of them have yellowed with age or are stained or crumpled. This one has a bit of crumpling, but it’s not too bad and the yellowish hue is its original color. I opened it when I was photographing it and found a business card from a car dealership I went to nearly three years ago. I guess I haven’t used this one in a while!

I like this one! Isn't it funny when you find old stuff in a purse you haven't used in a long time? Like finding money in last winter's coat pockets!

Finding money is the best! Almost, that is... I have a purse I inherited from my grandma and it's got some of her necessities. You can check it out here: http://vintagepurse.blogspot.com/2007/06/needlepoint-handbag.html

Has the plastic on these always yellowed? I've yet to find one that hasn't?

In this case, I think the yellow tone--more of a golden, really--is the fabric underneath. But, definitely, a lot of them get yellow (or worse, sticky, bleah!) with age. My favorite plastic-covered purse in my entire collection is this one:

It's not perfect, but it's in pretty nice shape!

Love the site... Did you just see the monkey wicker purse go on Ebay for almost $400??? I see you have a white one.

Ooh. I didn't see that, but there's a Midas of Miami crab that's just about ready to end at some crazy price.

I do have a white monkey and a smaller, natural wicker monkey. I'll try to get a pic of the little guy on The Vintage Purse Gallery today!
